Update on the Registration of Social Care Workers
The Social Care Workers Registration Board, appointed in March 2015, is currently undertaking the necessary preparatory work to open its register for social care workers.
One of the statutory functions of the Board is to approval the education and training required for eligibility to apply for entry to the social care workers register. Regulatory approval of education and training is a judgment as to whether a programme consistently and effectively prepares graduates for entry into the register of that profession. To receive approval a programme must demonstrate that it meets specific education quality assurance requirements of the Board.
The Social Care Workers Registration Board has not yet approved any education and training programmes for entry to its register and the register is not yet open.
The Social Care Workers Registration Board is currently developing its quality assurance requirements for the approval and monitoring of education and training programmes for its register.
The term ‘approved’ applies only to those qualifications and programmes which have undergone CORU’s approval process, and have been deemed to meet a Registration Board’s Criteria and Standards of Proficiency for one of the regulated professions. Once approved, these qualifications will appear on the Approved Qualifications (AQ) Bye-Law for that profession. Once a student successfully completes a CORU approved programme and holds an approved qualification, they will be eligible to apply for registration with the Registration Board.
Stakeholder Consultation and Updates
The Social Care Workers Registration Board will consult on a number of documents which will underpin the regulation of the profession. These include the profession specific Criteria for Education and Training programmes and the Standards of Proficiency for entry to the register. There are core Criteria for Education and Training programmes which CORU expects all of its approved programmes and regulated professionals to meet.
