CORU Annual Report 2022

17 NovemberToday CORU has published its Annual Report for 2022. This report is a combined document of the Annual Reports of the twelve Registration Boards and our Council.

In 2022, CORU recorded a 10% increase in the number of professionals it regulated, reaching 25,070 registrants for the first time. CORU is predicting a significant growth in registrant numbers with the opening of the Social Care Workers Register later this month.

Included with the growth recorded in CORU’s annual report was a 65% increase in the number of registered medical scientists and a 5% increase in the number of registered physiotherapists. CORU has also seen an increase in the number of people applying for the recognition of international qualifications, which grew by 60% in 2022 to 1,307.

Welcoming the publication of the Annual Report, Margaret Hynds O’Flanagan, CEO of CORU said, “CORU has continued to make significant strides in advancing the regulation of health and social care professionals in Ireland. Each of our over 25,000 registrants are committed to providing consistent and high-quality care, which benefits patients and service users right across our society.

“This growth in our role and responsibility to protect the public will continue as we roll out regulation to further professions. We will reach the milestone of opening our Social Care Workers Register later this month and expect to reach 40,000 professional registrants within the next five years.”

Commenting on fitness to practise complaints received from the public Ms. Hynds O’Flanagan said “The vast majority of people experience excellent care from CORU registered professionals. But when there is a shortcoming CORU can and does investigate and acts when required. In 2022 we received 55 complaints in relation to fitness to practise and processed 29 enforcement files, demonstrating our commitment to act whenever concerns are raised.”
