Ireland’s Podiatrists and Chiropodists urged to register with CORU before deadline

Ireland’s podiatrists and chiropodists will be subject to new statutory regulations from 31 March 2023. From that date, only those professionals who have applied to register with CORU will be entitled to work in Ireland using these titles. With the deadline fast approaching CORU, Ireland’s multi-profession health and social care regulator, is urging all practitioners to complete their applications without delay.

CORU’s role is to protect the public by promoting high standards of professional conduct, education, training and competence across a wide range of professions. Podiatry will be the 12th profession fully regulated by CORU, which now oversees the work of over 25,000 health and social care professionals in Ireland.

Regulation is a positive development as Ginny Hanrahan, CEO of CORU explains, “The introduction of regulation to cover the work of podiatrists and chiropodists sends a powerful message about the quality and consistency of care patients can expect. It is a major milestone and one that everyone working in the profession should be extremely proud of. We look forward to working with the registrants to ensure the highest standards are consistently delivered.”

CORU has revealed that, despite the Register opening in 2021, a significant number of practitioners have yet to register. Hanrahan is now advising all those working in the profession to act now to avoid problems. “We have designed the registration process to be as clear and straightforward as possible. But it can still take applicants time to complete. For example, you will need to compile relevant academic transcripts and complete a Garda vetting application. Those who delay could find themselves missing the deadline.”

“After the deadline date of 31 March 2023, the titles of “podiatrist” and “chiropodist” will become legally protected in Ireland. Missing this deadline means being unable to work. This could have serious implications for individuals’ careers as well as to the care of their patients.
