Criteria and Standards of Proficiency

Criteria for Education and Training Programmes

In order to protect the public, CORU requires educational bodies to deliver qualifications that prepare professionals to provide safe and appropriate care.

In order for a programme to be approved by CORU it must meet the criteria for education and training programmes. There are:

  • Core Criteria for Education and Training Programmes - these are the standards that all education and training programmes across the 15 professions regulated by CORU must meet.
  • Profession Specific Criteria for Education and Training Programmes - these are the standards that set out the profession specific standards for education and training programmes.

The Criteria for Education and Training Programmes describe how the education provider facilitates and evaluates the achievement of the standards of proficiency. They are used only for programme approval and monitoring to ensure that all graduates, regardless of where they are on the academic grading spectrum attain the standards of proficiency, are fit for entry to the Register and practise.

Standards of Proficiency

The standards of proficiency are the threshold standards of practice set by a Registration Board for safe and effective practice. The standards of proficiency provide detail on the knowledge and skills that all registrants must have. In the approval and monitoring of education and training programmes, the standards of proficiency are used to ensure that graduates of a programme holding a specific qualification have the required knowledge and skills to practice safely in a given profession.

Standards of Proficiency:
  • Describe what the health and social care professional is able to do
